I've been getting a lot of the same questions from many people about painting with oils.
I've collected them here so that it might help someone.
Q: Should you wait till its dried to apply more paint?
A: I try to paint on a wet canvas as much as I can when painting because it adds a softness that you cant get once the first layer of paint has dried. This is called painting "wet-into-wet."
Q: What paints do you use?
A: I use a few different kinds, but my absolute favorite is Gamblin. I love the texture and its has the perfect consistency, it feels like painting with butter!
Q: My paints are dry/thick/muddy etc, what is wrong?
A: You might want to try mixing some paint thinner to your paint if its seems really thick or dried out a bit somehow, dont add too much or it will crackle, or look pale. Are you using student garde paint? that also might be the problem. Never use anything other than artist grade paint, student grade paint is not the same as artist grade and will not help you learn how to properly use/mix oil colors. There is not as much pigment and more filler.
Q: Anything you wish someone had told you or wish that you'd realized earlier?
A: I wish I would have realized sooner that its never too late to change your painting when you see a mistake. No matter how much you like the eye you just painted/drew, if its in the wrong place you need to fix it. This is the only way you will get better. As soon as I realized this my paintings became MUCH better! This applies to all kinds of art.
Hope this helps!
